Saturday morning seemed to bring an end to the extreme heat we have been having
for the past weeks. The morning was cool and a little foggy as 10 cars arrived for the
extended 71 mile Ladies Driving Tour. After doughnuts, coffee and juice, all
"Drivers" were given a bandanna so they could be distinguished from just ordinary
passengers! The "real" drivers, Dorothy Bristing, Janice Jones and Lisa Hughes all
proceeded with the imposters to tour around Puddingstone Lake, by Brackett
Airport and down through Pomona on the way to our stop at Yanks Air Museum in
Chino. All was going well until the Hughes’ "T" decided that this steep uphill section
of Garey Avenue seemed like a great place to stop running! Lisa grabbed the
brakes and kept the car from rolling back down the hill. Frank Bristing, Rob Stewart
and Loren Burch all jumped from their cars to assist Ray in determining the problem.
After a few minutes in the street, Loren hooked up a towline and pulled the T to a
parking area that was deemed a little safer to commence repairs. Some lengths of
wire appeared and in a few minutes the culprit was determined to be a bad frame
ground. Out with the handy pocketknife, a few scrapes of paint, and now we have
spark! Lisa being a real trouper, jumped back in, took the wheel and was off again,
much to the surprise of Ray!
Our stop at Yanks was a great experience, viewing some absolutely beautiful
vintage aircraft. We were given a personal guided tour through the restoration shop
and also the museum, where all the flyable aircraft are displayed. If you missed the
tour, this place is definitely worth the drive to see.
Our lunch stop at Farmer Boys went smoothly with only the Barakats having to wait
for their meal, nothing unusual here. However, their "T" threw the low speed band
before this stop, but Rick soldiered on using the ruxtell as a 2 speed transmission.
It was then off on our 47 miles return drive, this route took us up and over Carbon
Canyon Road where we met up with a contingent of a large Porsche Club touring the
same road. Even though we were a bit slower, we all got a thumbs up from the
Porsche drivers! Our route then headed up Brea Canyon Road into Diamond Bar,
around the LA Fair Grounds, through downtown LaVerne and San Dimas until we
arrived back at the Bristings. After a some cold drinks, (yes there was snowballs!)
the barbecue was fired up and the grilling commenced. All in all, another LDT was in
the bag but with fewer ladies this year! C’mon now, next year we need a BIG turnout
of feminine drivers!
