Mothers Day Old HomesTour
|
Once again we started the day at our house with doughnuts and coffee and some time for socializing. Several tour goers hadn’
t been to our house before so we showed the around a bit. The weather always seems to be great on Mother’s Day and this
was as good as it gets. We had a total of 20 cars show up carrying 46 enthusiastic people. Six of the cars were from the Santa
Anita As Model A Ford club. Horseless carriages represented makers: Ford (several), Oldsmobile (2), Chalmers, Hudson,
White, Hupmobile, Studebaker and Cadillac. Horseless Carriage Club members attending were Bob, Vickie, Alex and Kristin
Trepanier with friends Jimmy Harwood and Adrian Sarabia, Bill and Marilyn Balduff, Jim and Dina Kroeger, Jim and Kathy
Glendinning, Gerry and Barbara Hosterman, Chuck and Joyce White, Ken and Donna Kaufmann, Neil Hagemeister, Susan
Berkaw, Red and Laurie Ladner Robb and Nancy Stewart and Bob and Lilly Ricewasser.
Aside from the Monrovia Historical Museum and the 1886 Anderson House Museum the tour included a large 1926 Spanish
Revival home with many original details including a “casita” or one room guest house in the back yard now being used as an
office. Even more grand was a 1930 Spanish Colonial Revival house with almost 7000 square feet of living space, original
pool house and pool and room for their three horses to run around. This was originally a ranch house with 50 acres, now on
about one acre. Also originally on acreage of producing groves was the next house, originally built in 1887 and much later
remodeled into a “Plantation” house and appearing grand on its large lot. A cute 1914 craftsman style bungalow that had
completely renovated in the last several years was worth seeing as well as two 1913 two story craftsman style houses. The
larger of these is truly impressive and is currently being restored by its current owners. This house features a huge front
porch built from river rock all around. The large a bright rooms throughout the house made this a very cheery place to visit.
Before seeing all of these houses, we gathered back at our house for a lunch of Chinese chicken salad, fruit, rolls etc and
way too much dessert featuring pies, brownies and cookies. Thanks to all for making this a fun day and come again next year.
